Mahesh Paudyal
Statue and the Eyes
For many years
I looked at this town
With the eyes of a man
At broad day, in sunlight
At night, in the lamp-light
Recently, one day
I borrowed the eyes from a statue for a while
And looked out
To my dismay, I saw
All over the town
Innumerable episodes of suspicion
Since that very moment
My heart and mind froze
And I became a statue.
These days,
I sympathize with the statues
Beyond telling.
