Artist of the Issue: Pramila Bajracharya

Master’s Degree in Fine Art, Fine Arts Department, Tribhuwan University, Nepal

Pramila takes cityscape as her subject matter but she adds vigor and vitality to provide renewed experience to the viewers. The ancient city gives the sense of protection and comfort as if the viewer wants to enter it and be nestled within it. The colours and shapes are altered to create the distinct form. The colours and forms speak more than the subject matter and the contents. Though the artist has taken inspiration from the ancient towns of Kathmandu valley, She adds more from her own imagination. Her concern is not to represent the objects as they are but to express the feeling and her sense of colour. She creates the landscapes of her own mind. Her landscapes generally lack the human figures.

In addition to the landscapes, she has executed some portraits that depict her loneliness and sense of loss. The invisible darkness, disillusionment and violence overwhelm the female character's feelings. The introvert figures sometimes bring out their nostalgia of the pleasant past. Despite the looming danger and suffering, the figures in distinct contour and bold colours suggest the enduring capacity of the character. The exotic and dream-like trees with a few cactus, clouds and hills transfer the viewers in the unacquainted world. The cactus brings a chain of associations. The thorns and desert connote to the darker side of the experience.

Pramila is a visual artist and founder member of Kasthamandap Art Studio and the member of the Board of Director of online art gallery E-Arts Nepal. She has been participating in more than 80 National and International group shows since 1991. She has participated in more than 50 art workshops and art camps in Kathmandu, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives and Bangladesh.

She has had 8 solo painting exhibitions to her credit. She was awarded consolation and special award in the National Art Exhibition in 1998 and 2004, was awarded with Gold Medal in 2002 from Arniko Yuwa Sewa Kosh. She was awarded in Professional Category in Fine Art from Birla Art Academy, Kolkatta, India in 2008. She has traveled to India, Sri Lanka, USA, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives.
