Artist of the Issue: Sunil Sigdel
Born in 1978, Sunil Sigdel is Pokhara-based artist of Nepal. He graduated in painting from the Tribhuvan University’s Fine Art Campus in Kathmandu. His work treats the various socio-political crises of his country and the contemporary world as subject matter. His background is in painting but he also creates installations and performances works on a regular basis.
Sunil has done 8 Solo exhibitions and a number of prestigious group exhibitions in Nepal, India, UK, Austria, Japan, Denmark, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong & South Korea. Some of his important group exhibitions are Nepal Art Now at Weltmuseum Wien, Vienna in 2019, Indian Art Fair 2017 (represent by Nepal Art Council), “Nepal Parallel Realities, Moesgaard Museum, Denmark in 2016, “The 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial, Japan in 2014, “Dhaka art Summit, Bangladesh in 2014, “Colombo Art Biennale, Sri Lanka in 2014, and “Kathmandu International Art Festival on 2010 and 2012.
Sunil has participated in several workshops and residencies including Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Residency in 2014 Japan, “Royal Overseas League Art Residency, Scotland in 2011, “International Artists Workshop (Theertha), Sri Lanka in 2010, “India–Nepal collaborative Art Residency Bangalore, India in 2010, “International Human Rights Workshop, Green Island, Taiwan in 2007, “International Artist Residency (Britto), Bangladesh in 2006 & “South Asian Art Residency (VASL), Pakistan in 2005.
He was awarded “Pradeysic Prativha Puraskar” 2018’ from Nepal Government Ministry of Cultural, “ROSL Annual Scholarship Award in 2011 by Royal Over-Seas League, London, UK & "Creative Young Artist Award 2007’ by Creative Artist Group, Pokhara, Nepal in 2007. He is one of the finalists of Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2012-2013.
