  Jaleshwori Shrestha

Jaeshwori Shrestha is one of the most famous names in the field of present Nepali Short Story writing. After publishing the story "Bhagawati" in Gorkhapatra in BS 2057 at the time of near retirement, she began the journey of writing short stories profoundly breaking the traditional superstitional beliefs related to women. Her career as a short story writer is moving ahead with a strong feminist consciousness. Though she was first acknowledged as a poet by a poem written in Newari language "Gulab" (The Rose), her first poem was Sutha (Morning) published in 2020 BS in the same language. But then the genre of her strength in story.

For Ms. Shrestha the art is to given the best human expression whether it is in colour or in tune or in words. She was born as fifth child from the father Sharanlal Shrestha and the mother Haridevi Shrestha in 2003 BS at Batutole in Kathmandu. Educated upto Bachelors Degree, Ms. Shrestha was married to a vigorous experimental poet Dwarika Shrestha in 2008 BS and became the mother of three daughtes- Niva, Nitya and Nishtha. She always takes pride and courage to be the mother of only daughters and has the great sense of responsibility too. Both the parents have voice while talking about their daughters- Everybody has to live one's life oneself with the feelings of happiness and sadness and it makes no difference whether you have sons or daughters.

Songs, music, travelling and gardening are the subjects of interest of writer Shrestha  Nepali food- daal (pulse), rice and curry is her favourite food and in colour she prefers green. Though most of her time is spent in household cores, the aloneness that comes after every member of the family goes out is the most ideal time for her to write and the depiction of operation of women is the main theme of her writing. Like Shakespeare, she believes that literature should educate the society through the awareness of pains and oppressions. In other words, literature, she believes, should change a person's heart rather than mere mind.

About existence she says- "I am searching the existence of life through creation and service. A culprit dies in the society but not his crimes which plunges the society into darkness. Me too, a member of the society, will die but my creation and services will not and may these creations and services end the darkness with light. My existence will reveal there." To flow like a musical mountain steam is life which can never return back in the same form and the upcoming events unfold as fated facts. This is what writer Shrestha believes in and the alike female consciousness seems to be seeped in her writing. Although there is strong influence of Freudian psychology in her writing, her stories consist the fragrance of native soil.

Her female characters do not make their way to court knocking justice to fight the pains and sufferings; they don't speak, yell out. Rather they fight against the immoral and corrupt males more courageous and challenging the serial norms ardently fulfilling the sexual desire within themselves and presenting it honestly than the characters of B.P. Koirala who make their life more revolutionary by fighting and living independently. They do not commit suicide, they do not escape from life, not they prefer to enslaved. They refuse slavery for the search of female existence and importance, shake the latent female consciousness and long to expose the reinterpretation, restructuring of parallel dignity in the complex relationship between male and female.

The writer Shrestha opines that perennial study and meditation leads to the birth of sublime literature. Great art leaves the good impression in the society. She further argues that although form and content both are important, its form that distinguishes art from rest of the things. Her only great wish in her remaining life is to expose the pain and suffering of Nepali women to the world. Her published opus includes: "Vapors of the fire" (story collection), "The home nex side" (Children's story collection), "Industrious Gauri" (Children's novel), "Silent rebellion" (story collection), and "Tisa's birthday" (Children's story collection). The organizations of her involvement include Nepali Art and Literature Dot Com Academy (Patron), Women's Literary Academy (Patron), Gunjan (Treasurer), Banita quarter yearly, Bani Prakashan, Bhanu Prakashan, Literary Journalists' Association. She is the founder of Dev Kumari Thapa Children's Literature Banita Award, Goma Memorial Award, Gunjan Prativa Award. She herself was awarded with Nawarangha Literary Award.

Although she does not believe in the next life, she would choose the life of a woman if it exist for the joy and pain of motherhood. Her dear writer include Parijat, Virginia Wolf, Silvia Plath, Tasalima Nasarin, Amrita Pritam, Siman De Bouvoir and Ajita Kaur. She has a strong will that Nepali literature be translated and be exposed to the whole world.

It is our great privilege for Nepali Art and Literature Dot Com Academy to have such a distinguished artist like Jaleshwori Shrestha as patron. We express our deep gratitude to her.
